Stress (psychological)
Definition: In psychology, stress is a feeling of strain and pressure.
According to a recent study, 77 percent of people regularly experience physical symptoms of stress, like feeling irritable, nervous, or lethargic. 48 percent of people feel their stress has increased over the past five years. Those surveyed reported that stress negatively impacts their personal and professional lives.
Advantage: Positive stress helps improve athletic performance. It also plays a factor in motivation, adaptation, and reaction to the environment.
Disadvantage: Excessive amounts of stress, however, may lead to bodily harm. Stress can increase the risk of strokes, heart attacks, ulcers, dwarfism, and mental illnesses such as depression.
Types of stressors: In psychology, researchers generally classify the different types of stressors into four categories: 1) crises/catastrophes, 2) major life events, 3) daily hassles/microstressors, and 4) ambient stressors.
